Uber public mythology · 2013-2017
Press, launch cities, “we are a tech platform”
“Uber described itself as a technology platform connecting riders and drivers — not a taxi company, and not a firm whose product was evading city law.”
Platform is the public noun. Greyball is the private verb. The product, in those cities, was a preference about which law applied.
The tell · A code name that sounds like a feature and targets a regulator is usually the honest product.
How this became public: NYT first described Greyball in 2017; Uber Files (Mark MacGann / Guardian / ICIJ) widened the lobbying record in 2022.
